Are Famous Entrepreneurs born or made?
The first time I heard this question was during my abandoned MBA program (I consider myself as one of the few drop outs that will make a huge difference) the lecturer walked into the class and asked this simple question, some people said entrepreneurs were born, others said they were made and there were those who chose to stay in the middle. Today, I ask you the same question I was asked a couple of years ago – are famous Entrepreneurs born or made? Feel free to leave a comment below with you answer.
At this point it is pertinent that we understand what is an Entrepreneur? An Entrepreneur is a person who has possession over a company, enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome. Entrepreneur in English is a term applied to the type of personality who is willing to take upon herself or himself a new venture or enterprise and accepts full responsibility for the outcome – could also mean independent distributors.
Now lets get a bit practical and hear from 6 Entrepreneurs – below are their inspiring quotes, that would enable you arrive at the right answer for you – its all about you and what you believe in.
Quotes from 6 Notable Entrepreneurs
The entrepreneur is our visionary, the creator in each of us. We’re born with that quality and it defines our lives as we respond to what we see, hear, feel, and experience. It is developed, nurtured, and given space to flourish or is squelched, thwarted, without air or stimulation, and dies.
Michael Gerber
Most new jobs won’t come from our biggest employers. They will come from our smallest. We’ve got to do everything we can to make entrepreneurial dreams a reality.
Ross Perot
I did something that challenged the banking world. Conventional banks look for the rich; we look for the absolutely poor. All people are entrepreneurs, but many don’t have the opportunity to find that out.
Muhammad Yunus
I wanted to be an editor or a journalist, I wasn’t really interested in being an entrepreneur, but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going.
Richard Branson
Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration.
Thomas Edison
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
You are probably inspired hearing from these entrepreneurs, that have all made a measurable impact in our lives. Here are 8 characteristics they all have in common;
8 Common Characteristics Possessed by Entrepreneurs;
- Dream – this is where it usually starts, a sudden realisation that things could be done differently, a questioning of the status quo.
- Vision – then the dream gradually becomes a vision that the entrepreneur sees at all times.
- Goal – she sets before her a goal,with an ultimate aim of attaining them.
- Confidence – this makes her very confident in herself, dreams and abilities.
- Risk Taking – she goes for it, against all odds, fully aware of the consequences.
- Positive Thinking – she remains positive despite the initial results
- Persistent – what follows is persistent, consistent action without which every other characteristics is meaningless.
- Leadership – most entrepreneurs usually end up being leaders in their sphere even though it was never part of the plan, it just happens and they usually posses a cool ability to influence others/followers.
No doubt there are other characteristics found in different categories of entrepreneurs but the 8 above are the most common. Take a moment to analyse these characteristics in line with the question – are Entrepreneurs born or made?
or better still rephrase the question to
Am I a born or made (in the making) Entrepreneur?

Yes I agree with you on that. But its funny that quite number of people have a developed mindset but no guts to stick to their entrepreneurial dreams.
I think that is true to say that Entrepreneurs have developed a mindset that sets them apart from the average person.
I can't agree any less, you are on target, sometimes we just need a little push in life for the true entrepreneurs in us to manifest. Thanks Sheri for stopping by; I love your blog and what you are doing.
I think entrepeneurs are both born and made. I don't think there is a standard formula. I would have never considered myself an entrepreneur until one day someone inspired me to take a chance and I never looked back. However, that person, was a definite born entrepreneur. That is the exciting thing about being alive, you have the ability to adapt, change, grow and forge forward in new directions.
The global art world is enthralled. The abiding fascination with China's modish new art has now spread to its south-western neighbour, with international dealers and curators flocking in to discover talent.
I would say made. If you look at some of the most successful entrepreneurs like richard branson, his parents constantly set him difficult challeneges – which helped make him competitive & hardworking.
Good opinion but how do you regard a Bill Gates who struck out on his own in a most unusual way?
Thank you CFA for doing justice to the subject matter in a very simple & thought provoking form, I know I a born entrepreneur but no courage to break out yet
I urge you to give it a try at the right time & let me be frank, its not easy (& never going to be easy) being an entrepreneur cos of the unique challenges and enduring lessons inherent in the entrepreneurial journey. So make up you mind and give it a try someday.
